OUTLINE OF DAILY CLASS ACTIVITIES
9:00
Class begins.  Person assigned to be in charge of BOCA ("Boas vindas", "Oração", "Cantar", "Anúncios") for the day, plans beforehand the people who will be saying the prayer and leading the music.  Boas vindas come first, followed by the hino.  Then we have the oração, which will (of course) be spoken in Portuguese.  Then the person in charge of BOCA for the day will do the anúncios (announcements) and can include any anecdote, joke or story that they may wish to share with the group.  BOCA participation for the semester will count as an assignment worth 100 points.  Anyone who misses the day they are assigned to do BOCA without arranging a substitute will lose 10 points from their 100 point total.
9:10
Manchete do Dia - Every day I will come to class with a headline from CNN's E-notícias in Portuguese, which we will read in class, underlining and defining any new words. These words will be used as part of our vocabulary for quizzes and tests.  I will also occasionally test your listening comprehension by reading a headline to you and having you fill in certain parts of the text that I have left blank.
9:20-9:50

Thursday, December 19, 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. COMPREHENSIVE FINAL EXAM (in classroom - HFAC F556)

GRADING SCALE AND DISTRIBUTION
I believe that the primary reason we attend school is to learn.  The acquisition of knowledge, along with repentance and forgiveness, should be one of the principal focuses of our mortal existence, and "if a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come" (D&C 130:19).  "It is impossible for a man to be saved in ignorance" (D&C 131:6).

Learning is a joyful experience and knowledge is in itself sufficient reward for any pains we must go through to acquire it, for it enables us to act in ways that are beneficial to ourselves and others that would not otherwise be possible.  Far from being a mere sedentary pursuit, learning is one of the primary motivations for action.  The wise learner will always find ample opportunity to make practical use of his knowledge.

I find it ironic and unfortunate that so many members of our society pay ever-increasing tuition fees to attain ever-decreasing quantities of knowledge.  We pay dearly to attend school and then attempt to attend as little actual class time as possible, and do as little work as is necessary to attain a certain grade, afterwards filing what little knowledge we gained on our mental shelves in hopes of never using it again.  This attitude must cease if we desire to build up Zion.

For this reason my grading policy reflects a greater emphasis on exams and quizzes, which are designed to test your knowledge, rather than homework, which is merely designed to aid you in acquiring knowledge and should not be an end in itself.  I am also aware that this class is one of many among most of my students' schedules, and I will not assign more work than is commensurate with the amount of time spent in class.

Here are some more good scriptures:
"My people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge." (Isaiah 5:13)
"And, verily I say unto you, that it is my will that you should hasten to ... obtain a knowledge of history, and of countries, and of kingdoms, of laws of God and man, and all this for the salvation of Zion." (D&C 93:53)
"Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding." (Proverbs 4:7)
"To be learned is good if [men] hearken unto the counsels of God" (2 Nephi 9:29)

ATTENDANCE
Four excused absences will be allowed before your grade is affected.  Each additional absence will reduce your final grade by a full letter.  These four absences are made available to you to avoid the need for special exceptions, so try to avoid using them unless you absolutely have to, or you may find yourself out of excused absences with a real emergency on your hands.

In a language class like this one, active student participation is essential for effective learning to take place, so attendance is crucial.  Please make every effort to come to class prepared and on time.
